I have come to realize that “targeted search” is ruining the Internet.
Targeted search is turning the Internet in to a tool, much like a hammer, and im not gonna lie, hammers are not much fun or muh inspiration. Yes they are incredibly useful and an incredible innovation for our species but inspirational they are not.
I feel that there should still be a place on the internet of great discovery and inspiration that is not trying to be monitized nor overrun with ads. For me, the idea of the Internet used to be something that was full of endless possibilities and each time I sat down there was a chance I would learn something new, be exposed to something I had never seen or find information on a subject I never knew existed. Now all I do is check my Facebook, Twitter and e-mail accounts every 30 seconds and sometimes get sent a funny video about someone hurting themselves or having sex with animals.
I feel that search has dumbed our society down even further and has taken away our ability to discover things for our selves. I feel it is taking the learning out of our lives and instead of freeing up more time for us to become better and more interesting human beings, it renders us useless and more bored than we were before.
Yes, I see the benefits of highly targeted results for ecommerce and business, I am not retarded. I am just saying that the internet does not have to be ALL BUSINESS. Inspiration my friends is what drives business, not targeted search. We cant have one with out the other, get rid of the inspiration and we will have nothing but the same recycled shitty ideas we have always had. Even those that are producing “great content” like Gary Vaynerchuk still have an alterer motive. Money. Now don’t get me wrong, Gary is a great guy, I have met him and he is full of new and exciting ideas, but he is using those ideas to make money, which is not a bad thing, it’s just not the type of inspiration or discovery I am talking about here. There are tons of these types of people in the world and while I see their value, I feel they are pulling us further away from a culture in which education and information are more valuable than money.
Where is the promise of sharing ideas? All I see is people trying to promote themselves and send me to their fucking blog to look at new wordpress themes, funny commercials or another goddamn list of how to keep my desktop organized or a new plug in for Firefox that sucks just as much as the last one did. Where are the opinions, where is the commentary, where are the thinkers and people of passion that influence others to open their minds? Oh, that’s right, I have to already know who they are and search for them specifically.
The idea of discovering something that you did not know existed is sadly being pushed out by targeted search. Gone are the days of being able to find a new hobby, find a new new idea, a new passion, a new friend or a new way of looking at something.
We need to be able to find organic and credible information that will allow us to be inspired as a species. News, celebrity gossip, Michael Jackson and whether or not Lady Gaga is a man is not helping us move forward as a species, if fact it is doing quite the opposite. Imagine the Internet being around in the cave man days and you are trying to find a new idea but you don’t know yet that fire had been harnessed or the wheel had been invented, how the HELL would you know to search for it. Yes, if you knew what it was you could find out everything about it and all of its benefits, but without prior knowledge of those things, you would remain in the dark, literally.
Even googling the very word “inspiration” returns a bunch of business results and a bunch of crap that has NOTHING to do with inspiration. No poets, no philosophers, no artists, authors, architects, or great thinkers. I get a list of some stupid e-cards that have quotes on them, the definition of inspiration as Wikipedia sees it, some other mixed crap, oh and my favorite result is Carnival Cruise Ship wanting me to book a vacation, now that’s what I call inspiration. All of these results are very, very much machine driven and it is up to us as humans to not allow Google to do our thinking for us. The very thing that separates us from machines is our ability to feel as well as do our own thinking. If we allow targeted search to continue to dominate the internet, we will all lose something that truly has the potential to shape our world.
Having been in this business of “web” for a very long time now, I know all the tricks. I know that people pay HUGE sums of money to get their sites ranked. No they do not pay Google directly, but they pay for content, articles, links, reviews and all sorts of other things in order for their site to be ranked in the top 10 on Google for a given word. That kind of thinking is not good for our society, nor is it good for the internet as a whole.
I feel like there are so many things in this world that I do not know exists and so many things that I will never be able to find because I don’t know the exact long tail search string that will garner those specific results. It makes me vary sad to know that this machine sitting on my lap has more information available on it to me than the Library of Congress and instead of me feeling a sense of wonder and inspiration each and every day I open my eyes, I am instead filled with a sense of frustrated and despair.
So I implore those that have the power to do so, to make something that allows for human inspiration to flourish on the Internet. Make us a larger section of the Internet that has nothing to do with business or advertising. Make something that allows for a more organic discovery and learning process. Make something that we a species can be proud of that will help us evolve and grow as human beings, not be able to buy flat screen tv’s faster and easier.

I would love your feedback on this topic. Do you feel the same way? Do you think I am an idiot? Do you know of a great place or site that offers the type of inspiration I am talking about? Don’t be shy, this is the time to let your oppinion be heard. Thanks so much.

That’s right all you lazy bastards, it’s time to get to work.
The auto industry and our previous administration have effectively FORCED us to pay for cars that we don’t want. How awesome is that.
